Sandy Springs Toastmasters 12/06/18 meeting recap and 12/13/18 roles

Hello Sandy Springs Toastmasters! Hope you had a great weekend! We know you love our weekly recaps but, today, before we get to the recaps, the club has a couple of announcements to make.
  • ·         On December 20th, in less than two weeks, the Sandy Springs Toastmasters will be having a holiday party! It’s a potluck, therefore, we will need to bring casserole dish(es), fruit, bread, pastries, juice, etc. Please email Paige and let her know what you’ll be bringing to the party.

  • ·         Our Club will be hosting a Table Topics Contest in January of 2019. We’re still working on setting the official date for it. We’ll be rolling out more information over the next couple of weeks.

Sandy Springs Toastmasters 12/06/18 Meeting Recap

Bud Otto, the club’s Sergeant At Arms, called the meeting to order with the pledge of allegiance exactly at 7 am. We had 10 members attend our meeting this week.

The president of our club, Paige Kerr, gave opening remarks then turned the meeting over to the Toastmaster of the day, Etsehiwot Ezra.

Etsehiwot’s theme for this meeting was “Goal Setting”. She stated that her theme was inspired by Una’s speech from a few weeks ago about “Pulling the Trigger”. Throughout the meeting, Etsehiwot went over the process it takes from setting a goal to achieving a goal. She even had great quotes to accompany her theme.

Steve Bragg gave the Word of the Day. Sanguine- Cheerfully optimistic, hopeful, or confident.

This meeting was a little different than our regular meetings. It had all three components of every Toastmaster meeting- table topics, prepared speeches, and evaluations- except this time, we changed the order. We started with prepared speeches followed by evaluations then wrapped it up with table topics.

We had two speakers for the day, David Kulze and Jeanne McDaniel. Our first speaker, David, gave a speech titled “The English Garden”. David, although he had been fulfilling leadership roles at our club such as toastmaster and timer, he hadn’t given a prepared speech in almost a year! It was nice to finally hear one of David’s speeches! Hopefully, he’ll give more than one speech in the next year. During his speech, David told us about his vacation to Austria and Germany. He spoke particularly about his visit to a park called The English Garden in Munich, Germany. Bud gave an astute evaluation of David’s speech. Jeanne, our second speaker, gave her first speech at The Sandy Springs Toastmasters! Her icebreaker speech was titled “My life told in 70s songs” where she told us her life story in 70s songs- as stated in the title! Paige gave a perceptive evaluation of Jeanne’s speech.

Jeanne won Best Speaker and Paige won Best Evaluator. Way to go ladies!

The group took a brief coffee break and enjoyed peanut butter blossom cookies. Yum! After about 8 minutes or so, Etsehiwot gave a couple of taps of the gavel to reconvene the meeting. It was finally time for Table Topics! Etsehiwot called on the Table Topics Master of the day, Paige Kerr, to the podium. Paige had a fun and thought-provoking set of questions prepared around her chosen topic “Milestones”. She had questions such as “When you think about milestones in your life, what comes to mind?” and “What milestone most filled you with pride and excitement” and “Tell us about a wonderful milestone birthday”. We all did our best to answer these questions as well as we could but the winning prize for Best Table Topics Answer went to Carlos Fuentes. Congratulations, Carlos!

Una Richards, the Vice President of Education, went over next week’s roles and made a couple of announcements.

The meeting was then adjourned.
