Sandy Springs Toastmasters
Meeting Recap for 8/30/18:
Our Sergeant at Arms, Bud Otto, called the meeting to
order with the pledge of allegiance. We had 13 people attend our meeting, 11
members and 2 guests.
Paige Kerr, our club president, gave opening remarks and
introduced Una Richards, our club vice president of education, to the podium to
give us a few upcoming announcements.
Una announced the following:
- Our
club has contacted our district’s pathways guide to come give us an
overview of Pathways. Please choose between the following dates, September
13th or September 20th.
- Members
are strongly encouraged to log into the toastmasters website and take the
pathways self assessment as well as watch the videos explaining what
pathways is and how it works prior to our Pathways Guide’s visit.
- If
you have specific questions regarding pathways after having taken the
online self assessment and would like more information, please reach out
to Una as soon as possible. She will relay your concerns to the pathways
guide so that he/she can include and personalize his/her presentation
towards our club’s questions and concerns.
Una called Bud back to the podium as he was also the
Toastmaster of the day. Bud reviewed and filled the roles. Paige volunteered to
give the word of the day, Fastidious
(adj.)- Attentive to detail excessively particular. Hard to please.
Bud then called Crystal Reeves, our Table Topics Master
of the day, to the podium. Crystal had a great theme prepared for her Table
Topics- Movies. She had a fun set of questions prepared for us. Jim Owen was
asked “Which actor would you like to play you in a movie?” to which he answered
Brad Pitt or George Clooney. Sharon Reid was asked “Which James Bond actor is
the best Bond?” to which she comically answered by saying Roger Moore because
she used to have a serious crush on him. She liked how he was sleek and was
able to charm the women as he charmed her. However, the response that won Best
Table Topics was Magdalena Raj’s answer to the question “What is the first
movie you remember watching in a theater and how did it affect you?”. Magdalena
responded by saying that the movie was Mary Poppins. She remembers it so well
because she was living in New York city and recalls going down 42nd
street, dressed up, wearing her black shoes, and remembers the carpeted stairs
in the theater because she ended up tripping over the stairs.
The group took a quick coffee break and enjoyed a fresh
batch of scones prepared by Magdalena. The meeting reconvened a few minutes
later. Una was the only speaker day. She gave her first ice breaker speech from
her Pathways path. The speech was titled “Cherish the ones you love”. During
her speech, Una let us into her life and shared with us who she is, what she
does, and how much she cherishes everyday she gets to spend with her 98 year
old mother who just got a computer. Paige gave an insightful evaluation of
Una’s speech.
Una won Best Speaker of the Day and Paige won Best
Evaluator of the Day.
Bud Otto went over next week’s roles and the meeting was
adjourned.
