Sandy Springs Toastmasters 08/30 Roles and 08/23 Meeting Recap

Hello, Sandy Springs Toastmasters! Please confirm your availability for 08/30/18 as soon as possible by replying to all.

Sandy Springs 8/23/18 Toastmasters Meeting Recap

After Bud Otto, our ever-faithful Sergeant-at-Arms, opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance, our President, Paige Kerr, welcomed everyone and introduced the Toastmaster of the Day, Ralston Medouze.

Ralston reviewed and filled all of the roles then presented the Word of the Day: Euphoria- a state of intense happiness and self-confidence. He then turned the meeting over to the Table Topics Master of the day, Paige Kerr, who challenged all members and guests to a series of deep, thought-provoking questions related to social media after wowing us with amazing stats, e.g. 70% of people use social media and spend approximately 121 billion minutes doing it! Questions included “is social media good or bad for us? What’s the best app? Yes or no to newsfeeds and GPS trackers?” There were so many intriguing answers but alas, Chris Ashkouti won Best Table Topics Answer for his response to next best app that’s not in existence.

Following a quick break, we had 2 speakers.

The first speaker was Chris Ashkouti who is going to be one of the speakers at his sister’s wedding next weekend. So, he took the opportunity to practice his remarks. He explained that the wedding planner gave him 2 minutes to introduce all the VIPs and set the tone for the rest of the speakers. Though Chris’ speech went slightly over the unrealistic time limit, it was authentic and presented with poise. The entire group provided him insightful and encouraging feedback. This is a reminder that our group can play a very valuable part in building our confidence and communication skills.

The second speaker was Bud Otto, introduced and evaluated by fellow member, Jim Owen. Bud’s speech was Project 4 in the CC manual “How To Say It” and was entitled “Capitalism-a Naturally Occurring Phenomenon.” Bud cited several sources to support his premise that Capitalism is a better choice than socialism. In addition to comments from members, our guests, Cedric, Jeanne and Wright, also offered very candid and supportive feedback.
