Sandy Springs 6-22-17 Toastmasters Meeting Recap

Our faithful Sergeant-At-Arms, Bud Otto, after opening the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance, turned the meeting over to VPE & TM, Anastasia Pass.  Anastasia reviewed the roles and brought up new member, Una Richards, to present the Word of the Day - haply.  No one was successful in using the word during the meeting.  Hopefully, we will during the week!

Table Topics Master, Paige Kerr, entertained us with a very creative mental exercise.  We had to look around the meeting room and choose any object and commit to it.  When she called on each member and our 2nd time visiting guest, Shu Jackson, she posed a different question to each about why we took the object of our choice to a particular place, e.g. Crystal Reeves picked the projector and her question was "Why did you take the projector to a job interview?".  Shu Jackson picked the sconces and her question was "Why did you take the sconces to the zoo?"  David Kulze was a repeat winner of  Best Table Topics for his response to "Why did you take your object (the big wall clock) to the dentist?"  David had us convinced that the clock had chipped his tooth when he was trying to hang it on the wall and he thought the dentist would never believe it so he had to take the clock to show him and to get it fixed all in the same day....Good job, David!

After a brief but very talkative break, the first speaker, Crystal Reeves, was introduced by Evaluator, Reza Shah.  Crystal gave her 3rd speech in the Advanced Entertaining Speaker Series, which is a 5-7 minutes humorous speech.  She titled it "Him, Me & the DMV" and it was a very funny story with a definite DMV twist about what happened when she pursued a younger man!  In Reza's evaluation, he also told a short story of his own about his experience with the DMV and then gave Crystal solid constructive feedback.  The second speaker, Melinda Schmitt, volunteered to give a speech even though she wasn't on the docket and did a great job.  It was her 5th speech in four months and objective was using body language and gestures.  Entitled, "Retrain Your Brain" it was a very informative and thought-provoking speech about how we use our brain, particularly the frontal cortex, and how we need to learn to turn off our brains as we're much better served if we use creativity and meditation.  Ralston Medouze offered Melinda some very substantive feedback about what he observed about her body language and how it could be strengthened during a speech.  Both speakers did an excellent job but alas, both of them went over the time limit this week!  Best Evaluator went to Ralston Medouze.

Our guest, Shu Jackson, gave the club positive marks and we were so excited when she added that she's ready to join.  Anastasia surveyed the group about their interest in getting together one evening for dinner and drinks and it was thumb's up from everyone.  So, we'll look at the calendar and throw some dates out for consideration soon to make this happen!

Melinda Schmitt said as long as she's going to have help from Jim Owen and Anastasia Pass, that she's ready to sign on as our VPE for 2017-18!  Huge thanks from all the Sandy Springs Toastmasters.  We are fortunate to have you as our new Vice President of Education!
