Sandy Springs Toastmasters 3-2-17 Meeting Recap

An even dozen attended our first meeting in March 2017 - ten members and 2 guests.  Bud Otto opened the meeting with the pledge and turned the meeting over to VP Education, Anastasia Pass. Anastasia returned for first time in 3 weeks following her hip replacement surgery 2/6 and was glad to be back and feeling good.  She reminded all members to renew their dues by March 15 if possible but definitely no later than March 31.

Other District 44 News Anastasia shared was:
1. Triple Crown incentive offered by the district as a "Spring to Success" - boost your self-confidence, communication skills and you and your club both benefit.  To earn the Triple Crown, members need to earn three (3) educational awards in the current Toastmaster year.  Possible awards are the Competent Communicator, Advanced Communicator, Competent Leader, Advanced Leader, etc.  See one of the local officers for more information, or go to Toastmasters.org website or members can check their manuals.
2. Chief Judges Training will be offered Thurs, Mar 9 from 6-8pm in Atlanta, GA at Jackson Memorial Baptist Church, 534 Fairburn Rd., NW, Atlanta 30331.  Completing this training will qualify members for this important leadership role at speech contests. Register asap.
3. Storytelling for Speakers Workshop - half-day trainig going beyond foundational presentation skills.  Saturday, April 29, 8:30-12:30pm, Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church, 3700 Pleasant Hill Rd., Duluth, GA.  Cost is $10; RSVP to cindycannon@accountantsone.com by April 21st.
4. Spring Conference May 12-13 in Renaissance Atlanta Midtown, Full Conference Registration is $154 until 3/17 and next rate is $159. Check out https://youtube/4WL7MEhr6c8 or Toastmasters.org for more info.

After Anastasia reviewed and filled the roles for the day and welcomed the two guests, Serina Cochran and David Kulze, Melinda Schmitt presented with a flair the Word of the Day ("coltish") and a fresh not frozen Joke about the VP of Peas.  Table Topics Master, Andrea Miranda, challenged everyone to a series of questions cleverly woven around the seasonal celebration of Mardi Gras. Melinda Schmitt won Best Table Topics award for her propostion to make Hug Day a big deal, national holiday and also for her story about feeling like a "kid in a candy store" when she took her 7 year old son to SkyZone for his bday party.

After the coffee break, compliments of Brittany Pare, Crystal Reeves, our General Evaluator, led the second half of the meeting by introducing the Evaluators - Jeremiah Jones and Andrea Miranda - who subsequently introduced the speakers, Reza Shah and John Calloway.  Reza gave his 4th speech entitled "My Country of Origin".  It was a very informative speech packed with facts and interesting content about Pakistan.  John Calloway gave his 3rd speech entitled "Overcoming a Slump", which was an inspirational presentation filled with tips and tricks and good quotations about how to get and stay motivated.  One of the resources he cited was a You Tube video series "Rise and Shine". Check this one out and see for yourself:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HLG_s9b2Uuw.  John also showed no fear by videotaping his speech and as soon as it's posted to You Tube, we'll share that, too.
While both evaluations were helpful and specific and both speakers did an outstanding job of communicating their messages, Andrea Miranda won Best Evaluator  and John Calloway won Best Speaker.
Crystal Reeves asked for Bud Otto's timer report - all qualified - and for Melinda Schmitt's Ah/Gr report, who noticed that almost everyone who came up to the front of the room for Table Topics started off with "so....".  Good point for all of us to keep in mindl!  Then Crystal gave us a thumbs-up overall evaluation of the entire meeting.  Each of the guests thought the meeting was very beneficial, enjoyed the casual, friendly atmosphere and both said they'd be back.   Next meeting is March 9.
