Sandy Springs Toastmasters 10/27/16 Meeting Recap

Bud Otto opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and then turned the meeting over to the club President, Alan Magee.  Alan told everyone about the volunteer youth speech contest judge and ballot counter opportunities in Sandy Springs available at the District 44 level Oct. 29, Nov. 5 and Nov. 6.  Anyone interested should call Barbara Wallace asap for the details.  Her number is 678-906-5785.  Our guest, John Callaway, was introduced and then Alan turned the meeting over to Toastmaster, Anastasia Pass, who also gave the Word of the Day, eristic and profound thoughts for the day (not), "why isn't there mouse flavored cat food?" and "why is lemon juice made with artificial flavor, while dishwashing liquid is made with real lemons"? LOL. After Anastasia reviewed and filled all the meeting roles, Table Topics Master, Paige Kerr, challenged everyone to explain the origin of several idiomatic expressions, e.g."butter them up", "let your hair down" and "don't throw the baby out with the bath water".  A series of very clever explanations were given, but the best Table Topics Award was won by our guest, John Callaway for his explanation of "break the ice".
After coffee and donuts, provided by Steve Bragg, the speaking portion of the meeting began.  Crystal Reeves introduced the solo speaker of the day, Andrea Miranda, who gave her first speech entitled "Breaking the Ice".  Andrea gave us a tiny glimpse into her life, as she described, "the tip of the iceberg".  We look forward to many more glimpses! General Evaluator, Jim Owen, closed out the speaking and evaluating portion of the meeting by calling for the reports and giving an overall evaluation of the meeting.
After the reports from the Timer, Jeremiah Jones, and Grammarian/Ah Counter, Reza Shah, roles and activities for the upcoming weeks were reviewed. Nov. 3 the regular speeches will be suspended for 3 Leadership Series presentations.  Members were encouraged to study the materials in their manuals and TM online to learn more about each of the TM roles.  It was noted that we will not meet on Nov. 24, Dec. 22 or Dec. 29.  December 8th we will have our Table Topics session followed by a Holiday Breakfast to which everyone will be asked to bring a dish to share.  More details to come.
